Top Cap

Top Cap is an indicator that uses market capitalization and price information to identify potential market tops. It is calculated by first determining the Average Cap, which is the cumulative sum of Market Capitalization divided by market age in days. This value is then multiplied by 35 to obtain the Top Cap.

Interpretation

Top Cap helps identify the upper bounds of Bitcoin market cycles by highlighting periods when market capitalization and price growth becomes unsustainable. It is most effective during parabolic price rallies driven by market euphoria and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).

Key Insights

  • The Top Cap indicator is useful for forecasting potential market tops, especially during parabolic price increases
  • When Bitcoin price approaches Top Cap, it can signal the market may be entering a euphoria phase and may be due for a price correction
  • Although historically effective, Top Cap failed to predict the 2021 cycle, where the price increase exhibited a more gradual and rounded top rather than a parabolic peak
